ลักษณะทางพฤกษศาสตร์
แตงกวาเป็นไม้เถามีอายุปีเดียว ต้นมีขนหยาบสีขาว ใบออกสลับกันตรงสามเหลี่ยมมนใหญ่ กว้าง 12 –18 เซนติเมตรมีแฉกใหญ่ 3 – 5 แฉก ตัวใบมีขนทั้ง 2 ด้าน ดอกแยกเป็นตัวผู้และตัวเมียอยู่บนต้นเดียวกันกลีบดอกเป็นหลอดสีเหลืองส่วยปลายแยกเป็น 5 กลีบ เมล็ดลีแบนผิวเรียนสีขาว ผล รูปทรงกระบอกมีลายเขียวแก่มีพื้นสีเขียวอมขาวมีขนาดต่างๆกัน ในทางพฤษกศาสตร์แตงกวาและแตงร้านมีชื่อวิทยาศาสตร์เดียวกันพืชนี้มีถินกำเนิดในทางตอนเหนือของประเทศอินเดีย เป็นพืชที่รู้จักกันดี ในบางพันธุ์ผลที่ยังอ่อนจะมีตุ่มยื่นออกมา
การใช้เครื่องสำอางและสรรพคุณยา
ฤทธิ์ฝาดสมาน
