เป็นไม้ล้มลุกเลื้อยแผ่ไปตามพื้นดินชอบที่ชื้นแฉะมีรากฝังลงในดินและงอกปลายยอดใหม่ชูขึ้น ใบเดี่ยวออกเป็นกระจุกตรงข้อจำนวน 2- 6 ใบแผ่นใบรูปไตขอบใบหยักใบกว้าง 2-5 เซนติเมตรดอก ช่อเป็นกระจุกสีแดงอมเขียวออกระหว่างช่อก้านใบกับลำต้นที่แผ่ติดดินผลขนาดเล็กเป็นลูกค่อนข้างกลมแตกได้

ฤทธิ์สมานบาดแผล
จากงานวิจัยพบว่าบัวบกสามารถทำให้แผลอักเสบต่างๆหายโดยทำให้แผลอ่อนตัวลง เพิ่มการสร้างเซลล์ผิวหนังอย่างรวดเร็วเพิ่มการไหลเวียนของเลือดไปยังบริเวณบาดแผลและมีฤทธิ์สมานบาดแผลจากคุณสมบัติเหล่านี้ปัจจุบันได้มีผู้นำสารสกัดบัวบกไปทำครีมทาช่วยรักษาแผลให้หายเร็วขึ้นและนำสารสกัดบัวบกไปผสมในเครื่องสำอาง
