ส่วนใหญ่พืชที่เรานำมาทำสมุนไพร คนจะนึกถึงพืชล้มลุก ต้นเล็กๆ แน่นอนว่าส่วนใหญ่ก็เป็นอย่างนั้น แต่สมุนไพรไทยบางอย่างก็อาจเป็นต้นไม้ใหญ่ได้เช่นกัน อย่างเช่นในวันนี้สมุนไพรไทยที่เราจะพูดถึงกันก้จัดเป็นต้นไม้ใหญ่ที่มีชื่อว่า อินทนิล นั่นเอง
ชื่อทางวิทยาศาสตร์ : Lagerstroemia speciosa (L.) Pers.
ชื่อโดยทั่วไป: Queen’s crape myrtle , Pride of India (ชื่อนี้บอกถิ่นที่มาของพืชชนิดนี้ได้เป็นอย่างดี)
ชื่อวงศ์ : LYTHRACEAE
ชื่อตามภูมิภาค : ฉ่วงมู ฉ่องพนา (กะเหรี่ยง-กาญจนบุรี) ตะแบกดำ (กรุงเทพฯ) บางอบะซา (มลายู-ยะลา, นราธิวาส) บาเย บาเอ (มลายู-ปัตตานี) อินทนิล (ภาคกลาง, ใต้)
ลักษณะของต้นอินทนิล:
- ลำต้น เป็นไม้ยืนต้น ขนาดกลางถึงขนาดใหญ่ สูง 5-20 เมตร ลำต้น ต้นเล็กมักคดงอ แต่พอใหญ่ขึ้นจะค่อยๆตรง โคนต้นไม้ไม่ค่อยพบพูพอน มักจะมีกิ่งใหญ่แตกจากลำต้นสูงเหนือพื้นดินขึ้นมาไม่มากนัก ดังนั้น เรือนยอดจึงแผ่กว้าง พุ่มแบบรูปร่มและคลุมส่วนโคนต้นเล็กน้อยเท่านั้น ผิวเปลือกนอกสีเทาหรือน้ำตาลอ่อน และมักจะมีรอยด่างเป็นดวงสีขาวๆ ทั่วไป ผิวของเปลือกค่อนข้างเรียบ ไม่แตกเป็นร่องหรือเป็นรอยแผลเป็น เปลือกหนาประมาณ 1 ซม. เปลือกในออกสีม่วง
- ใบ เป็นใบเดี่ยว ออกตรงข้ามหรือเยื้องกันเล็กน้อย ทรงใบรูปขอบขนานหรือบางทีเป้นรูปขอบขนานแกมรูปหอก กว้าง 5-10 ซม. ยาว 11-26 ซม. เนื้อใบค่อนข้างหนา เกลี้ยง เป็นมันทั้งสองด้าน โคนใบมนหรือเบี้ยวเยื้องกันเล็กน้อย ปลายใบเรียวและเป็นติ่งแหลม เส้นแขนงใบ มี 9-17 คู่ เส้นโค้งอ่อนและจะจรดกับเส้นถัดไปบริเวณใกล้ๆ ขอบใบเส้นใบย่อยเห็นไม่เด่นชัดนัก ขอบใบเรียบหรือเป็นคลื่นบ้างเล็กน้อย ก้านใบยาวประมาณ 1 ซม. เกลี้ยง ไม่มีขน
- ดอก ดอกของอินทนิลจะมีสีต่างๆ กัน เช่น สีม่วงสด ม่วงอมชมพู หรือม่วงล้วนๆ ออกรวมกันเป็นช่อโต มีความสวยงามตามะรรมชาติ ยาวถึง 30 ซม. ตามปลายกิ่งหรือตามง่ามใบตอนใกล้ๆ ปลายกิ่ง ตรงส่วนบนสุดของดอกตูมจะมีตุ่มกลมเล็กๆ ตั้งอยู่ตรงกลาง ผิวนอกของกลีบฐานดอกซึ่งติดกันเป็นรูปถ้วยหรือรูปกรวยหงายจะมีสันนูนตามยาวปรากฎชัด และมีขนสั้นปกคลุมประปราย กลีบดอกบาง รูปช้อนที่มีโคนกลีบเป็นก้านเรียว ผิวกลีบเป็นคลื่นๆ บ้างเล็กน้อย เมื่อบานเต็มที่จะมีรัศมีกว้างถึง 5 ซม. รังไข่ กลม เกลี้ยง ผล รูปไข่เกลี้ยงๆ ยาว 2-2.5 ซม. เมื่อแก่จะแยกออกเป็น 6 เสี่ยง เผยให้เห็นเมล็ดเล็กๆ ที่มีปีกเป็นครีบบางๆ ทางด้านบน

- ใบอินทนิล มีรสจืด-ขมฝาดเย็น ใช้ต้มหรือชงกับน้ำร้อน ใช้ลดระดับน้ำตาลในเลือด บรรเทาอาการเบาหวาน ขับปัสสาวะ ลดความดันโลหิต
- เปลือก มีรสฝาดขม ต้มกับน้ำรับประทานแก้ไข้และแก้ท้องเสีย
- เมล็ด มีรสขม แก้ดรคเบาหวาน ช่วยให้นอนหลับสบาย
- แก่น มีรสขมใช้ต้มดื่ม รักาาโรคเกี่ยวกับทางเดินปัสสาวะ
- ราก มีรสขม ใช้รักาาโรคแผลในปาก
